Healthcare Specific Interest Group

It is our belief there is a need for a healthcare SIG to serve the needs of Maine residents that work in the state’s healthcare institutions and the many residents in the state in need of care since Maine has the oldest population in the United States. Specifically, we want the SIG to focus on the needs of health care providers and their business partners. Subsets of this population include those who implement projects specific to new business strategies, marketing programs, new patient treatment, regulatory mandates and related information technology and business process organizational change programs, etc.

The Health Care Industry in Maine is changing like never before, and is beginning to recognize the need for internally developed new ideas and for health care industry spawned project managers. For example: Maine was one of the first states to establish a health care insurance program for all of its citizens, has invested in a project to develop a statewide electronic patient records system, and is closely examining the expanded use of telemedicine in its rural areas. In addition one of its huge successes (which has not been trumpeted) has been the formation of networks of providers to share data, resources, physicians, ambulances, communications equipment and gain access to large discounts from drug and hospital supply companies that could have only been achieved by leveraging the buying power of a multiplicity of providers. Today the health care industry in Maine is largely paper-based. As all of us in the industry know there is a regulation (HIPAA) that mandates the use of standard electronic transactions. This will cause a huge culture shift for the state’s health care industry! It also presents an outstanding, once in a life time opportunity for the industry to leap frog all other industries. As Thomas Friedman said in his best selling book “The World is Flat” – the economies of underdeveloped nations like China, Russia and Brazil can leap fog developed nations by effectively using the new technologies currently available – this effective use is easier for them because they are not bound by the paradynes created by the existing older technologies and business practices – the same principles apply to the healthcare industry in Maine!

The number of regulations and the sensitive environment in health care make many of the issues in implementing projects unique. The Maine PMI Chapter has established a SIG to support Heath Care professionals in Maine to address these industry-specific issues.
