April 10, 2002 --  Advanced Technology  -- Carl Gruenler, host
Directions

Abstract:
Anyone who’s been paying attention to the events of our time and general advancements in computing technology will recognize the following new words in the public lexicon: smart cards, physical security, biometrics, and wireless computing.  Bringing them all together in an integrated system is viewed as the way ahead for a new defense-in-depth physical security model for the United States Navy, and potentially the Department of Defense (DoD).

Detailed Description:
Working with the physical security and information technology sponsors in Washington D.C. plus leading edge contractors including the Bath Iron Works Advanced Technology Group, Cisco Systems, and SAIC Smart Solutions Group, CAPT Carl Gruenler is developing this program at Commander Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing Five, Naval Air Station Brunswick.

CAPT Gruenler will share a glimpse of this physical security model, of the DoD information technology programs and emerging capabilities that support it, and the numerous project management hurdles encountered and anticipated.  Multi-technology smart cards, public key infrastructure, biometrics, wearable wireless computers, virtual private networks, 802.11 wireless networks, voice over IP, hypersonic sound and directional stick radiator, etc. all contribute to the fundamental and profound changes anticipated from the creative integration of enabling technologies.  Considering the complexity of the systems integration; the fundamental sea change in physical security, force protection, maintenance, and communications; and the growing number of Navy and DoD offices involved, it is no wonder that significant programmatic challenges have resulted in managing this series of projects.  Because longevity as well as vision is critical to effecting positive change in a massive and bureaucratic organization, the Captain has developed his own project management “survival plan”.

Join us for a glimpse of an exciting future in the creative application of emerging technologies.

Speaker Biography:
CAPT Gruenler is the Smart Wing Program Manager and NCIS (Navy Criminal Investigative Service) Field Project Manager.  He is a reservist recalled to active duty in May 1999 to apply technology to complex problems in an operational environment.  CAPT Gruenler is a Surface Warfare Officer, has had six reserve command tours, and has been a Project Manager, Chief Financial Officer, President & CEO, and Board Chairman in his civilian career.
