Title:

Building a PM Infrastructure from the Ground Up
(or should that be "From the Underground Up"?)  --  Bob Nailor, BIW

Description:

Bath Iron Works (BIW) recognized an emerging need 3 years ago for a more projectized approach to manage incoming work.

In response, the Human Resource division was chartered to develop a Project Management Training program to support skill development for PMs. Using PCI Global's Bottom-Line Leadership course as a foundation, an advanced three module, 44 hour training program was developed and implemented.

Shortly after the training program began, several project managers realized that there was a need to establish a formal structure within the company. As a result they began a grass roots effort that became know as the Project Management Sustainability project. It is the means they used to develop the infrastructure and tools to support project management. Come hear their story and the strategies used to change the culture at BIW.

The presentation will cover the following:

• Overview of the training program, including and an interactive demonstration.

• Explanation of the approach to establishing the infrastructure and supporting tools to create a sustained new PM approach at BIW.

• A report card of progress to date including successes and failures.

Speaker Biography:

Bob has worked at Bath Iron Works for 15 years and has a diverse background in Project Management. He has worked as the project lead on several manufacturing process improvement projects.  Bob has also worked as the project lead and lead instructor on several training course development projects, including two that were accredited by Maine Maritime Academy. Bob is a certified instructor for the BIW Project Management Training program and is currently functioning as in the lead role for the Project Management Sustainability effort. His role includes managing the implementation of the tools and process developed and as a project liaison for initiatives throughout BIW.

Directions:

Meeting will be held at the BIW Surface Ship Support Center (SSSC), previously know as the James Bldg at 290 Bath Road.

From the South:
Take I-95 North to Exit 22, Brunswick Route 1 North
Follow Route 1 North through Brunswick to the Cooks Corner, NAS Brunswick Exit.
Upon exiting the highway move to the far left lane and turn left onto the Bath Road.
About 1/2 mile past 2nd stop light the SSSC is on the right across from the Viking Motor Inn.

From I-95 North:
Take I-95 South to Exit 23, Coastal Connector.
Follow the Coastal Connector to Route 1 North
Follow Route 1 North to the Cooks Corner, NAS Brunswick Exit.
Upon exiting the highway move to the far left lane and turn left onto the Bath Road.
About 1/2 mile past 2nd stop light the SSSC is on the right across from the Viking Motor Inn.

From Route 1 North:
Get on Route 1 South
Follow Route 1 to the Cooks Corner, NAS Brunswick Exit.
Upon exiting the highway move to the far left lane and turn left onto the Bath Road.
About 1/2 mile past 2nd stop light the SSSC is on the right across from the Viking Motor Inn.
