Building a "Lean" PM Infrastructure  --  Bob Nailor, BIW

Description:

Bath Iron Works (BIW) recognized an emerging need 3 years ago for a more projectized approach to manage incoming work.

In response, the Human Resource division was chartered to develop a Project Management Training program to support skill development for PMs. Using PCI Global's Bottom-Line Leadership course as a foundation, an advanced three module, 44 hour training program was developed and implemented.

Shortly after the training program began, several project managers realized that there was a need to establish a formal structure within the company. As a result they began a grass roots effort that became know as the Project Management Sustainability project. It is the means they used to develop the infrastructure and tools to support project management. Come hear their story and the strategies used to change the culture at BIW.

The presentation will cover the following:

• Overview of the training program, including and an interactive demonstration.

• Explanation of the approach to establishing the infrastructure and supporting tools to create a sustained new PM approach at BIW.

• A report card of progress to date including successes and failures.

• A preview of the new tools being used to enhance the infrastructure.

Speaker Biography:

Bob has worked at Bath Iron Works for 15 years and has a diverse background in Project Management. He has worked as the project lead on several manufacturing process improvement projects.  Bob has also worked as the project lead and lead instructor on several training course development projects, including two that were accredited by Maine Maritime Academy. Bob is a certified instructor for the BIW Project Management Training program and is currently functioning as in the lead role for the Project Management Sustainability effort. His role includes managing the implementation of the tools and process developed and as a project liaison for initiatives throughout BIW.

Directions:

The meeting is at the Wright Express (WEX) Darling Ave Campus, which is accessible from Foden Road or Maine Mall Road. The meeting will be held in the Café which is located in the rear of #75 Darling Ave. The Darling campus is composed of four connected buildings (Buildings 53, 75, 95 and 97) and the easiest way to get to the Café is to enter at #53 Darling and drive around to the rear of #75 Darling.

Take exit for Airport onto Western Ave (south) to right on Payne Road (Maine Mall Rd.).
Next left onto Darling Ave.

From 295 -

From Exit 3, take right onto Westbrook St. to Western Ave (Young's Furniture on Corner).
Next Left onto Foden Rd.
Next Right onto Darling Ave.
