Sept 12th Meeting:
Put Risk Management Training Wheels
 on Your Project Support Office

Why navigate the Project Management rapids
in a risk management canoe
if you intend to leave the paddle ashore?

That is the engaging concept presented by risk management expert Bruce C. Chadbourne, a PMP who is an instructor in the Project Management Certificate Programs for the Boston University Corporate Education Center.

Chadbourne will present a program, "Put Risk Management Training Wheels on Your Project Support Office," at the Sept. 12 meeting of Maine PMI in Portland.

He urges Project Managers to avoid reliance on the PMBOK Guide alone for everything needed to practice effective risk management. While the failure of project organizations to establish a meaningful risk management mindset has been a recurring theme at recent symposia, the experts frequently fail to mention the central importance for a simple risk data base.

Such a "tool" serves to collect and maintain information that preserves the collective memory of the details of each risk facing the project and the project office. A generic data base is the "paddle" Chadbourne refers to as a basic component of effective risk management.

In his Maine PMI talk, he will describe simple approaches to maintaining risk management information, then focus on a data base has been used in his project office. He will outline the basic type of information collected and how to maintain it; how the data base enhances the specific PMBOK process inputs, tools and outputs; ongoing use of historical information; and other applications.

Chadbourne is a 25-year veteran of Engineering Project Management, spanning service as a U.S. Navy line officer, followed by projects in systems and software engineering with GE Aerospace and Lockheed Martin. For the past five years, He has been responsible for developing project office and risk management discipline in his company.
The concepts he will present to the Maine group have been published and presented in various PMI venues. He is the Region I Risk SIG director and lives in Merrimack, N.H., although he traces the previous 11 generations of his family to Maine.

The Sept. 12 meeting will be at Unum-Provident Headquarters Building 1, 2211 Outer Congress Street, Portland. It opens with registration and an inexpensive buffet at 5:30 p.m., followed by a chapter business meeting and, at 6:30, the program. The public is invited.

PMI Maine to inaugurate
Project of the Year competition

The PMI Maine will sponsor a competition for the best project in the state for 2001, and honor the winner next June.

The chapter's Board of Directors established the competition to highlight the prevalence of excellent projects in the state, and to spread the word about the growing importance of Project Management as an effective modern organizational tool.

The board appointed PMI Maine member Jim Milliken to head the Maine Project of the Year planning and organization process. Anyone interested in the topic, or in working on the project, is invited to contact Milliken.

The Maine competition will be modeled on the PMI International Project of the Year Award, with suitable modifications for the Maine start-up.

It is expected that organizational steps will be complete in time for invitations to be sent in January.
